Lake Jocassee Sept 2025

Three Days on Lake Jocassee: Tandem Paddling, Waterfalls & Car Camping Comfort

Location: Lake Jocassee, South Carolina
Trip Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Total Distance Paddled: 31.43 miles
Kayak: Delta Tandem

Day 1 – Thompson River Falls & Devils Fork Camp

We launched our Delta tandem kayak into the clear waters of Lake Jocassee, no gear today as we were just on a day trip. Our goal for the day was to reach Thompson River Falls, a beautiful cascade tucked into the northern coves of the lake. The paddle was scenic and energizing, with calm waters and crisp fall air.

Stats:

  • Distance: 12.87 miles
  • Time: 3h 28m
  • Avg. Pace: 16:11 /mi
  • Calories Burned: ~1,300

After reaching the falls and taking in the view, we headed back to Devils Fork State Park where camp was already set. Our new car-connected tent was a game-changer—complete with cots, we put up a screen patio, and even a TV. It was more glamping than camping, and the perfect way to relax after a long paddle.

Day 2 – Toxaway River & Foothills Trail Camp

We woke to a nice morning and launched northward, heading toward the mouth of the Toxaway River. This part of the lake is more remote, with steep forested slopes and hidden coves. The water narrows as you approach the river, and the scenery becomes increasingly wild and serene.

Stats:

  • Distance: 9.73 miles
  • Time: 3h 55m
  • Avg Pace: 24:11 /mi
  • Avg Heart Rate: 105 bpm
  • Calories Burned: ~1,135

We found a quiet spot to camp near the Foothills Trail, a long-distance hiking trail that crosses the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The area was peaceful, with the sounds of nature all around. It was a perfect place to unwind, have a simple meal, and enjoy the solitude.  The amount of gear we carried in the Delta was impressive.

Day 3 – Return Paddle & Hidden Coves

Our final day was a return paddle to Devils Fork, retracing our route with a more direct paddle this time. The lake was calm and reflective, making for a smooth and meditative paddle.

Stats:

  • Distance: 8.83 miles
  • Time: 2h 26m
  • Avg Pace: 16:33 /mi
  • Avg Heart Rate: 105 bpm
  • Calories Burned: ~767

Lake Jocassee delivered everything we hoped for—waterfalls, wilderness, and a perfect blend of adventure and comfort.
